    Face mount Dovetail connectors have been around for a long time in the Mass timber industry. Simpson is newer to the mass timber market. I prefer these Simpson hangers over Sherpa or Rothoblaas concealed face mount hangers. They seem competitive with Knapp, and Pitzl hangers. Simpson does have great whitepapers for their hangers. For timber screws again Simpson is newer to the market. Their options differ from more established brands which make them more difficult to specify when not used with simpson products. Often we say that builders can take their pick between Heco, Assy, GRK, Spax or Schmid, but for Simpson we have to specify specifically. I see them on smaller projects as some of them can be sourced quickly at local hardware stores. A nice point for the Simpson exterior screws is that as they are not galvanized, they can often be used where SS screws might normally be required when in coastal areas or with woods that react and stain with HDG screws.

    Haas is vender that makes the best garage doors on the market, (my opinion). I installed 2 steel back sandwich doors on my home, and noticed a huge difference in temps throughout the year. The insulted doors will help maintain whatever the temperature is in the garage. And they are a very durable door, they do not dent as easy and you won't have to worry about the vinyl/foam insulation tearing or puncturing.

    I have wondered why windows are not made with a lucite like product instead of glass as lucite is better at insulating and sound attenuation. Also the lucite can vary greatly in it's thickness to increase those positive attributes. The huge windows you are showing have around an R 10 rating which frankly is impressive for a window but not impressive in comparison to an R 30 wall.

    I totally agree with you on an indoor fireplace being an air sieve. You're not going to have a super tight home if you have one. I've always enjoyed having a fireplace, but when you consider the energy loss and ultimately the pollution burning wood creates, I don't really have a desire for one anymore. It's one thing when we need an open fire to cook to eat or heat to survive, but another when it's just for ambiance and it's adding pollution to the atmosphere. I know having one's personal fireplace going doesn't sound like much of an issue, but multiply that by a million others going at the same time and it adds up. When we are doing it all over the world on multiple nights a week you can see how it adds to air pollution exponentially. As cozy as a fireplace has always seemed, I'm not sure they have as much value today, given the cost to build and the cost they will take on our shared environment.

    Tyvek dry rots. Took siding off a renovation and the Tyvek was falling apart. On another job, a house built in 1947 with wood siding, the siding was starting to dry rot. after the siding was off the tar paper was 100% secure and sound, keeping the moisture out of the wall. AMAZING. I recently put Hardie Board on my own house, so I put 4 coats of exterior enamel on both sides of the siding to seal it, then on install used 45ln tarpaper as a moisture barrier, then caulked the back edges and overlap of the Hardie board to seal it up. I't been on the house now for 12 years and no cracks anywhere. Chris Callaway, TECS Insulation, Richland Hills TX

    I don't know exactly who the audience for this channel is. Ultra wealthy people just pay people to do this stuff so they don't need to be watching this. Maybe high-end builders can learn something here. All the stuff Matt teaches is pretty good but really it's not practical for most of us. I do the best that I can when I build or remodel but if you go through all the paces he's gone through you would spend a fortune. He goes into all these great details using sip wall systems and sip wall roofing and layers upon layers of things and organizing everything perfectly. Do you have any idea how much all this stuff costs? He's not telling you this. Just try it. You better have a big bank account or make half a million dollars a year!

    I don't understand the point of this video. Judging by the title I thought it was going to compare two houses both with ducts and HVAC equipment in the attic but one with an unvented conditioned attic and the other vented and not conditioned. But no, the vented, unconditioned attic has neither ductwork nor HVAC equipment in the attic. So no like to like comparison. If I were building a house from scratch, I would never put ductwork and HVAC in any attic or unconditioned space. But since I am stuck with my ductwork and HVAC system in a vented attic, I would have liked to have heard alternatives to sealing and conditioning the attic.

    Sharkbite has saved me in so many repairs. Repairs get very costly when a house is plumbed wrong, and it can be difficult to find honest repairmen. With that said, the PTC introduced me to the other methods that i also now use, but the PTC allows for easier installation in confined spaces, or by disabled personnel. I am no expert but still learned some things in this video. Thank you for covering so many types of connectors and the tools needed.

    What are the steps re flashing a window opening? I assume you apply Zip Stretch Tape or Liquid Flash to the framed opening; then install the window and apply Zip Flashing Tape to the exterior of the window; and then install InSoFast panels onto Zip System. Are those the steps? Is any additional flashing installed on top of the InSoFast before bricks or clapboards are installed?

    I've used a lot of Simpson hardware, and they make great hangers and screws. I like all of this hardware except those concealed aluminum hangers. I don't like the fact that you cannot inspect the structural properties of the connection to see if enough screws were used and if the right screws were used. Once that connection is made, it seems like it would be impossible to modify or repair. With external connectors, you could always shore up a beam in 50 years if needed, remove the hardware, realign anything that might have moved, and then replace the hardware. I would not be comfortable using a concealed aluminum connector in an earthquake zone. If there's an earthquake, a fire, a tornado, a roof leak or differential building settlement, you cannot inspect if the connection hasn't been damaged. It just doesn't seem worth it. I'd much rather use external connectors that can be serviced.

      Great point, I was thinking the same thing. Also, Aluminum is not as strong as steel, the beam is basically being supported by the beveled edge on the two brackets, seems like a bad design.

    • @clutteredchicagogarage2720
      @clutteredchicagogarage2720 День назад

      @@JeremeyHowlett i would guess that those thick aluminum brackets are strong enough. However, aluminum is much more brittle than steel. If the structure doesn’t shift then I would not necessarily be concerned about strength, but I would be quite concerned about how they could hold up in an earthquake. Timber framing is popular on the west coast, but i would not trust using those anywhere on the west coast where there could be an earthquake.

    Always wondered why some countries doesn’t use the attic as living space? Where I’m from that’s standard, but our roofs are steeper so there’s more inside head room and we use clay or concrete tiles that make the isolation process a lot easier as they can ventilate. Also we have the purlins resting on the side walls so we need only one rafter in the middle, that also saves a lot of space.
